Topic: Five Sigma® Project Management: Emerging Practices in Project Management
Speaker: John M. Nevison

Learn how to apply the latest business thinking about "three sigma" quality and "six sigma" manufacturing to your projects by using the breakthrough concept of Five Sigma project management. Building on the PMBOK Guide and the "critical chain," Five Sigma project management creates a new approach that weaves together the latest thinking about "common cause" and "special cause" variations in systems that are projects. Five Sigma project planning blends sophisticated estimating into a robust schedule and budget, then adds the best in product quality and risk management. This is the approach for the 21st century manager of a technical project.

The presentation will address specific skills such as:

  • Range-based estimation of effort and duration
  • Drawing the "work rectangle" of days and staff-days ("stays"), and combining them into a Nevison Time-Scaled Network (NTSNŠ) Logic Diagram
  • Progress measurement techniques, such as "buffer" management and "earned value" status reporting
  • How to manage a team of creative individuals engaged in unpredictable work
  • Using the latest terminology from the PMBOK Guide
  • How to integrate these state-of-the-art ideas into the beliefs and practices of the often-resistant organization
